Sometimes friendship feels so ordinary we forget to notice it. Our lives are filled to the brim with interactions with people—old friends, new acquaintances, church friends, or the barista from our favorite coffee shop.

Sometimes, though, our lives feel clear empty of meaningful interactions—we long for deep conversations, life-friends, and to be known.

In this volume of Commonplace, we stop, acknowledge, and consider the friendships that do make up our lives, in the fulness of what they are. Most of them are imperfect. We don’t always know how to be a friend, or how to let someone else in. But in all the diversity and complexity, our friendships continue to be one of the biggest gifts of our lives, one of the primary ways we learn to know God. May you be inspired here to bear witness to and grow toward the beauty of friendship.
